Alumni take to the stage in Broadway musical

This holiday season Whoville will get a touch of purple in the Broadway musical “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Abilene Christian University theatre alumni Jenavene (Hester ’09) and Seth Bazacas (’09) will appear in the national touring musical, beginning Nov. 9 in Omaha, Neb.
Seth will play the role of Young Max, a lively puppy of agility and cheer. According to producers, “Beloved Max the Dog narrates this charming and comical tale of the miserable Grinch, whose heart is ‘two sizes too small,’ and his attempt to wreak havoc on the tiny town of Whoville by trying to steal Christmas.”
Adam Hester, professor of theatre and chair of the department, is excited about Seth’s opportunity.
“This is a terrific break for Seth on a well-respected national tour that will be playing large venues in major U.S. cities, as well as in Toronto,” says Hester. “It’s especially exciting to see him get this major role so soon after graduation. It speaks well of him, our department and the university as a whole. Seth will certainly be an exciting performer to watch in the future.”
Jenavene will be part of the 25-member cast playing the citizens of Whoville. While at ACU, she starred in the musical “All Shook Up” as Natalie, and she says she continues to apply what she has learned at ACU in her profession.
“Every day I use what I have learned: auditioning, voice lessons, dance classes and acting classes,” says Jenavene. “I am going into my career prepared because of the strong foundation ACU provided me.”
The musical will feature the book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. The performance will include the classic songs, “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas,” written by Theodor (“Dr. Seuss”) Geisel, with music by Tony Award-winning composer Albert Hague.
Regionally, the musical will be in Houston at the Hobby Center, Nov. 24-Dec. 5, and in Dallas at the AT&T Performing Arts Center/Winspear Opera House, Dec. 7-12.
