Abilene’s public affairs show earns state-wide acclaim

August 9th, 2010

The city of Abilene and producers of ACU-TV are glowing with pride. Their joint production, “Abilene City Magazine,” has been awarded second place in the 2010 Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (TATOA) Programming Awards.

“We are very pleased for the City of Abilene and its staff,” says Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of ACU’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. “We have enjoyed our partnership with the city on this program for many years.”

Abilene’s 30-minute program was honored in the Interview/Talk Show category, beating out three other cities’ entries, including Houston’s “Latina Voices: Small Talk.”

“Abilene City Magazine” is a public affairs television show that airs every Friday night at 7 p.m. and Monday at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Cable Channel 7 and broadcast Channel 7, KXN-TV. It is a joint project of City Manager Larry Gilley, Communications & Media Relations Manager Lenka Wright, and the staff of ACU-TV under the direction of John Best, ACU’s director of Broadcast Operations.

“It’s a great experience for our students to produce a show that airs regularly like this,” says Bacon. “We’re also pleased to have the chance to help make this kind of programming affordable in a market the size of Abilene.”

Bacon adds, “It’s rewarding that Abilene City Magazine was in the top three with Houston and Irving – much larger cities with far greater resources.”
