Senator Dick Durbin–Wishing him well

News broke yesterday that Senator Dick Durbin had undergone surgery to remove a small gastrointestinal stromal tumor, a benign growth that can go undetected for years and become malignant.
Gastroenterologist Dr. Sohrab Mobarhan said these tumors are rare—only about 4,500 cases a year in the U.S. At Rush, we see only a couple each year. They can originate anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract – the stomach, where Durbin’s was found, the small intestine, the colon or rectum – or in the abdomen. Most important, Mobarhan said, “We know these tumors’ weak point – we know how to get rid of them.”
As he told the Chicago Tribune, “If you are lucky, they find a tiny little tumor and they remove it and that’s it.”
Mobarhan, like everyone here at Rush, wishes Senator Durbin a full recovery.
