If you know a youth with disabilities who is excelling in categories such as academics, community service, and independent living skills, now is your chance to nominate that person for a Yes I Can! Award, sponsored by the Council For Exceptional Children.
Each year, CEC selects 27 winners for their achievements in one of nine categories: academics, arts, athletics, community service, employment, extracurricular activities, independent living skills, self-advocacy and technology. Last year’s winners included Kristina Brewster, a 19-year-old student from Atlanta with Down syndrome who manages the girl’s junior varsity soccer team and participates in her church choir, Girl Scouts and the Special Olympics; and Chelsea King from Brooklyn, a 17-year-old with spinal muscular atrophy who uses technology to read aloud to classmates and send e-mails to friends and family.
The nomination period ends Oct. 22, so get those names in! Also, the CEC has produced a short video that explains the program in more detail.

Would you play this game?
September 28th, 2010
I love puzzles and small little programming projects. When you can combine those two at get a project that you can use for a good learning/teaching experience it is just a bit of gold. When the concepts you can get into the project go beyond programming so much the better. And I think I have found one of these nuggets. About a week ago someone sent the following puzzle to a mailing list I am on.
You walk into a casino and discover that they are offering an exciting new game called 52-Card Match, which is played with two ordinary 52-card decks of playing cards.
The player is handed one deck, and the dealer takes the other. The dealer thoroughly shuffles his deck and sets it face down in front of you. You can shuffle your deck as thoroughly as you please and then also set it face down in front of you.
The cards are then turned over one at a time from each deck, i.e. one from each deck is turned over simultaneously each time. If any pair matches exactly (rank and suit), the game is over and the casino wins.

Premature Matriculation: Early Decision and Early Action Admissions
September 28th, 2010
Shocking news: I have some flaws. I am too impatient and too often I’m guilty of procrastination. So while I glare at the microwave for making my popcorn FAR too slowly, I also tend to submit any and all required paperwork at the very last possible minute – OK, last second.
My procrastination issues are also to blame for my delay in writing about early decision and early action admissions, as I deeply dislike these admission plans.
The Problem with Early Decision in the College Admissions Process
I will start by trying to explain, to some small extent, why I find the discussion of early admission programs so aggravating.

CBT Nuggets Vs TrainSignal 70-662 Exchange Server 2010 Training
September 27th, 2010
According to a recent research survey, 44% of Enterprises are going to migrate to Exchange Server 2010 in the next few months. Also, professionals possessing Microsoft Exchange 2010 experience or certification can easily find employment with salaries of over $80,000 per year.
The newest Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is not just a simple email platform. Rather, it is a full featured Unified Communication solution offering integrated enterprise telephony (VoIP), voice mail, security-enhanced email distribution, calendaring, conferencing, instant messaging and many more. This means that in order to tame the beast called Exchange Server 2010 you will need an excellent training course. And this applies to experienced I.T professionals as well.
Microsoft has introduced also a certification associated with Exchange 2010. It is called MCTS Exchange Server 2010, Configuration. To get this certification you need to pass exam number 70-662. So, the question that arises here is: Shall I get a training course which will teach me all the details of the Exchange 2010 platform or a training course to help me pass the 70-662 exam ?

Imagine Cup–Solving the Worlds Problems Through Software
September 25th, 2010
There are many indications that today’s students are motivated as much, if not more, by the chance to make a difference in the world as they are to make money. By the same token it is not always obvious or clear to these students that computer science and software has huge potential to do a bit of both. But in fact computer science is making a big difference I the world and could potentially make an even larger difference. This is the logic behind the Imagine Cup, arguably the world’s premier student technology competitions, basing their theme around the UN Millennium Goals. The goal of the Imagine Cup most briefly is to:
Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems

So what is the competition? Actually a series of competitions and challenges that open the doors for multiple types of solutions in different areas of interest.
The top event is the Software Design competition to create real-world software applications using Microsoft technologies.

Not Job Hunting? Six Reasons to Still Attend a Career Fair…
September 25th, 2010
Dr. Joseph BarberIf you are a Freshman or Sophomore, sometimes it’s confusing of why to attend a Career Fair. (Especially that our Engineering & Computer Science Fair is right around the corner on Oct. 4th) Well, courtesy of UPenn’s Career Center, check out these six things you can do at career fairs even if you aren’t actively looking for a job.
1) Hand people your well-formatted, mistake-free, Career Services’ critiqued resume. OK, if you are not looking for a job, this is one that you might be able to skip. But…, what happens if you are chatting with employers (see below), and someone asks about your experience, and then says, “do you have a resume I can take away with me?”. As you don’t want to miss this opportunity to network, which is the better answer:
- “Errr…., no, but I can write my name and email on this napkin”
- “Yes, this reflects my experience to date, and obviously I am going to be gaining more experience over the next few months/years.

Time to Update the Blogroll!
September 23rd, 2010
Tweet
I’d say it’s time to blow the dust off my blog roll (which you see to the right) and add some new perspectives, while shuffling off some old blogs that have gone dormant.
Have a suggestion for a blog to add? Post your thoughts here, and I’ll check it out. Please note that I’m looking for bloggers who are linked in some way to education of students with disabilities, so I’m not as interested in blogs that focus primarily on general education teaching, general education policy, or raising a child with a disability.
I hope to have a handful of new voices to share with you soon.
