“It’s absolutely counterintuitive if you say when the economy goes to hell, we make people pay more,” said Fred Eshelman, a board member.
Wake schools releases progress report for accreditation review
November 23rd, 2011
The Wake County Public School System on Wednesday released a report on the steps it has taken to retain its accreditation with an Atlanta-based group that’s threatened to revoke it.
In March, AdvancED placed the school system on what it calls an “accredited warned” status for what it called a “lack of effective governance and leadership” as well as a “climate of uncertainty, suspicion and mistrust throughout the community.”
The district had to address seven action points before representatives of the accreditation group return to Raleigh next week.
Among the actions the school board has taken is creating and implementing a strategic plan for the school system that will be finalized and used to guide the work of the board.

KIPP, Uplift expansions are a good sign for North Texas
November 16th, 2011
In the last few weeks, two of the state’s most successful charter school operators have announced plans to expand their work in North Texas. In October, KIPP said it wants to create 10 new campuses in Dallas. Yesterday, Uplift Education announced that it will double the number of its schools in this region.
The news matters most for families that want to give their children a chance to enroll in a charter school that has a record of achievement. Schools in the KIPP and Uplift networks generally have had strong scores on the state’s achievement test and getting their children to attend college. Uplift, for example, reports that 100 percent of the students in its five high schools have been accepted into college.
But the expansion of these schools also says something about the healthiness of education in North Texas. In districts around the country that are really trying to raise their student achievement levels, you find a willingness to give students more choices.
In Denver, for example, the district is creating a large number of innovation schools.

A Gift Given Back To Audie Cornish’s Teacher
November 14th, 2011
As part of NPR’s partnership with StoryCorps’ National Day of Listening, host Audie Cornish sits down with her former high school history teacher, Lynne Ramsay.
AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
My next guest taught me how to solve all kinds of puzzles of history. Lynn Harding was my history teacher in high school back in Randolph, Massachusetts; and my current events teacher and my homeroom teacher. Well, we spent a lot of time together and our conversation is part of the StoryCorps National Day of Listening Project this year.
We’re hoping you might also sit down with a teacher on the day after Thanksgiving and listen. It’s not something I’d really done before with Mrs. Harding because, well, she was really tough on us.
LYNN HARDING: Some said my name was Hard not Harding.
(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)
HARDING: But, you know, we were taught you don’t smile until November. Get them under your control because then the learning will take place if you don’t have to spend all your time on those extraneous factors, such as discipline.

Tuition hikes divide UNC board
November 9th, 2011
The UNC system’s Board of Governors appears to be split on the idea of allowing big tuition increases at public university campuses next year.
The debate began Thursday, before the 16 individual campuses have come forward with their requests for next year’s tuition and fee changes. The board took no action and won’t vote on tuition until early next year.
But already there are indications that consensus will be hard to reach as UNC campuses deal with a state budget cut equivalent to 15.6 percent and North Carolina families struggle to make ends meet in a weak economy. Some board members said the campuses have little choice but to raise tuition; others say this is not the time to burden students and families with higher costs.
