Chinese techies seek riches via startups
April 16th, 2011
Tyr Chen, a 29-year-old resident of Beijing, is doing what many of his friends won’t: He’s establishing a startup.
Chen, a former software engineer at Juniper Networks, now no longer has a stable income. Instead, his wife helps pay off the 8,000 yuan ($1,227) monthly cost to cover their mortgage.
“Sometimes I feel a little bitter about it,” said Chen, who is working on building a travel planning website. “I’m very, very excited. But I’m also nervous.”
By trying to establish his own startup, Chen is committing what is akin to a cultural taboo in China. In a society where stability is often times more valued, getting involved in a startup is a career move often shied away from. But with the growth of China’s Internet market, industry experts have said they are seeing more young professionals willing to take risks, which has helped lead to a new wave of IT companies in Beijing.
China has the world’s largest Internet population, at 457 million, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

SNIA puts storage networking tutorials online
April 12th, 2011
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. — The Storage Networking Industry Association this week announced a doubling its efforts to put tutorials for IT managers and storage administers online. The group said it hopes to get upwards of 60 sessions online by the end of 2011.
The videos of vendor-neutral education sessions, produced at the Storage Networking World conference here, are 45 minutes long and include slide shows.
“It’s an important way for SNIA to help educate the market by offering rich online content,” said SNIA Chairman Wayne Adams. “By the end of the year, we hope to have 50 to 60 tutorials online.”
Tutorial topics run the gamut, from an introduction to data protection on tape and disk, to a session on solid-state drive use in the data center to another on cryptography.
Currently, there are 10 tutorials available. By the end of this week, 12 more will be produced, Adams said.
SNIA said it has also partnered with the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) to help disseminate professional IT certification courses in storage networking and other areas.

Rolling through the Campus Tour Video – and its budget: EM Strasbourg Business School
April 12th, 2011
Ive featured a good number of campus tour videos on this blog, but this one is a first.
Not because its from a Business School based in France (I dont get pitched stories often by European institutions, but Im interested in any good examples no matter where they come from), but because this campus tour video is entirely done on a chair with wheels (no, its not a wheel chair, but could have been as the campus is 100% accessible have I been told).
Just watch this video to understand what I mean.
So, what do you think?
Its fast-paced, innovative and let you see a lot of the campus and the city in a just 3 minutes.
The first time I watched it I thought it could work great as an ad for the chair, the real guest star in this production.
Well, it turns out this campus video tour was actually sponsored by the chair manufacturer, Steelcase, who paid a fair amount of the production fees for the video, according to Julien Sultan Fournier from Noir sur Blanc Production, the agency that created and produced the video for EM Strasbourg Business School.
The company provided a few free chairs for the shooting as well.

Calamity Days Restored
April 11th, 2011
After a slight legislative skirmish between the Ohio House and Senate over unwanted amendments, HB 36, the “Restoration of Calamity Days” bill was signed into law today by Governor John Kasich.
The Columbus Dispatch reported:
Schools will get two additional snow days this year, after the Ohio Senate brought a quick end yesterday to a dispute over the bill granting them.
The legislation, which would increase from three to five the number of so-called calamity days that schools can miss without having to make them up, got hung up in the House this week, mainly over a disputed provision related to charter schools that the Senate had added to the bill.
House Democrats, whose votes were needed to ensure that the bill would take effect immediately, did not like a requirement that public schools bus students to charter schools, STEM schools or nonpublic schools when they make up calamity days.

New York Chooses HOPE Foundation’s ‘Failure Is Not an Option’ Approach with SIG Monies
April 11th, 2011
Developing the Leadership to Change School Culture Is Key for New York and Eight Other States
BLOOMINGTON, IND. – –Today an additional 10 schools opted to include the HOPE Foundation’s Failure Is Not an Option® process for improving low-performing schools in their School Improvement Grant applications. They join schools throughout the country that have selected the leadership capacity-building Intensive School Reform model for their “Transformation Model”—one of four models approved by the US Department of Education for addressing low-performance. The common theme in these schools seems to be a growing agreement among many that shifting the schools’ culture is critical to sustaining success.
“Having been responsible for support to low-performing schools in New York City for much of my career, I have come to the conclusion that simply ‘restructuring’ the instructional program as an intervention is doomed to failure without a significant accompanying cultural change, indicated Ben Waxman, Network Leader for CEI-PEA.
Schools rarely fail because of the programs they attempt to implement, but rather they fail because the capacity to implement is thwarted by the present culture.
