Top 4 findings on the State of Social Media in #highered
April 18th, 2011
Everybody wants to know how social media is doing in higher education lately (unless it is how higher ed is doing social media
Slover Linett Strategies Inc., mStoner and CASE have just released the high-level results of their Second Comprehensive Study of Social Media Use by Schools, Colleges and Universities (you can find more info about the first study on Michael Stoners blog).
This study was conducted via an online survey. In March 2011 a random sample of 18,000 CASE members was invited via email to complete this survey about social media strategies and practices. A total of 951 responded resulting in a 5.3% response rate for this survey. It should be noted that CASE membership base is mainly composed of advancement and alumni professionals which explains the large representation (40%) of units in charge of alum relations among the survey population of respondents
I was given the chance to review the summary of the findings of this CASE Social Media survey 10 days ago.

ACU Department of Music fills April with song
April 15th, 2011
This month, ACU’s Department of Music has a full schedule of events sure to tempt any music lover. Students are showcasing their talents in the opera “The Consul,” a spring concert by ACU’s Percussion and Steel Drum Ensemble, and the ACU Jazz Ensemble concert.
On April 12 and 16, ACU Opera presents “The Consul” in Cullen Auditorium. According to a review by Michael White of “The Independent,” it is “a nightmare-thriller of an opera, set in a police state where the central character, Magda, is trying to flee the country and in need of a visa from the unseen and unheard consul.” White calls the opera “Hitchcock with recitatives.”
Proceeds from Tuesday night’s performance went to benefit the International Rescue Committee, an international relief organization based in the U.S. Tickets for Saturday’s show are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and military personnel. The show begins at 8 p.m.
On April 18, ACU Percussion and Steel Drum Ensemble will present its spring concert in Cullen Auditorium, with free admission.

Rolling through the Campus Tour Video – and its budget: EM Strasbourg Business School
April 12th, 2011
Ive featured a good number of campus tour videos on this blog, but this one is a first.
Not because its from a Business School based in France (I dont get pitched stories often by European institutions, but Im interested in any good examples no matter where they come from), but because this campus tour video is entirely done on a chair with wheels (no, its not a wheel chair, but could have been as the campus is 100% accessible have I been told).
Just watch this video to understand what I mean.
So, what do you think?
Its fast-paced, innovative and let you see a lot of the campus and the city in a just 3 minutes.
The first time I watched it I thought it could work great as an ad for the chair, the real guest star in this production.
Well, it turns out this campus video tour was actually sponsored by the chair manufacturer, Steelcase, who paid a fair amount of the production fees for the video, according to Julien Sultan Fournier from Noir sur Blanc Production, the agency that created and produced the video for EM Strasbourg Business School.
The company provided a few free chairs for the shooting as well.

Students place in national interior design competition
April 10th, 2011
Three of ACU’s interior design students were honored at this year’s 2011 Brass Ring Design Competition. The students’ projects were among more than 1600 entries in the competition.
“Each of the ACU entries represented the excellent talent and determination typical of our students,” said Kitty Wasemiller, professor and director of ACU’s Interior Design program. “It’s great to have these entries confirmed as top-notch, and against larger universities. I am so proud of them!”
Bronze awards were give to Ashley Ohlhausen, senior design major from Abilene, for her hotel design, ”Mareas Vivas” and Haley Buffington, junior interior design major from The Woodlands, for her restaurant design “Add-A-Cone”. Alex Potess, senior interior design major from Lubbock, and Lisha Cottrill, junior interior design major from Cedar Hill, both received honorable mentions for their hotel designs.

Physics students attend largest national conference
April 4th, 2011
A team of 17 students from Abilene Christian University recently attended the 2011 American Physical Society’s March Meeting (APSMM). The conference, held in Dallas March 21-25, is the largest national physics meeting held each year.
APSMM included presentations of about 7500 papers and seven presentations from Nobel Laureates, including Konstantin Novoselov, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for work in grapheme.
Each student who attended the conference is a student member of the APS. Dr. Michael Daugherity, assistant professor of physics, and Dr. Timothy Head, assistant professor of physics, also attended APSMM.
“This was an interesting and exciting chance for ACU students to experience a national physics conference,” says Head. “It was an exceptional opportunity for our students to interact with Nobel Laureates and other leaders in many different areas of physics. It allows students to see the amazing breadth of physics research in the U.S.

A 1-month no-committee web redesign for Juniata College Homepage #highered
March 25th, 2011
Spring is the season of homepage redesign in higher ed!
After my post about the University of Bath earlier this week, Id like to highlight today the homepage redesign done at Juniata College (If youre wondering why I keep writing about Juniata College, wonder no more. They keep pitching me via email their latest projects. You should do it too, you know
I found this homepage redesign interesting for several reasons, but the feature that really piqued my interest was a new navigation component, revisiting the whole audience-based scheme. Stewart Foss from eduStyle will review many navigation schemes used in higher ed web redesigns during his session at the Web Redesign Boot Camp (April 12 -14, 2011).
BEFORE
AFTER
Juniata College
Personally, this is the first time Ive seen an audience-based navigation tackled this way.
