An in-house new redesign for Macalester College website

August 20th, 2010

This is just a quick post about a newly redesigned website: Macalester College’s.

Nick Balcom Raleigh, Online Communications Coordinator at Macalester, emailed me a couple of weeks ago about the redesign – so it’s about time I share it with you :-)

The new version was developed in-house by a team of four and has replaced a previous design from 2004.

Nick explained that the new design is built using the open-source CSS framework Blueprint, jQuery and jQuery UI plugin to enhance interactive elements and is compliant with W3C and ADA. I really like how the live Facebook feed is integrated in the footer.

The contrast between the main area and the footer/background with bright colors in the former and sepia tones in the second makes this design even more powerful. If you want to read more about its different features, you can have a look at this post written by the team.

What do you think?

Senator Dick Durbin–Wishing him well

August 12th, 2010

Dr. Sohrab Mobarhan

News broke yesterday that Senator Dick Durbin had undergone surgery to remove a small gastrointestinal stromal tumor, a benign growth that can go undetected for years and become malignant.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Sohrab Mobarhan said these tumors are rare—only about 4,500 cases a year in the U.S.  At Rush, we see only a couple each year.  They can originate anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract – the stomach, where Durbin’s was found, the small intestine, the colon or rectum – or in the abdomen.  Most important, Mobarhan said, “We know these tumors’ weak point – we know how to get rid of them.”

As he told the Chicago Tribune, “If you are lucky, they find a tiny little tumor and they remove it and that’s it.”

Mobarhan, like everyone here at Rush, wishes Senator Durbin a full recovery.

Abilene’s public affairs show earns state-wide acclaim

August 9th, 2010

The city of Abilene and producers of ACU-TV are glowing with pride. Their joint production, “Abilene City Magazine,” has been awarded second place in the 2010 Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (TATOA) Programming Awards.

“We are very pleased for the City of Abilene and its staff,” says Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of ACU’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. “We have enjoyed our partnership with the city on this program for many years.”

Abilene’s 30-minute program was honored in the Interview/Talk Show category, beating out three other cities’ entries, including Houston’s “Latina Voices: Small Talk.”

“Abilene City Magazine” is a public affairs television show that airs every Friday night at 7 p.m. and Monday at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Cable Channel 7 and broadcast Channel 7, KXN-TV. It is a joint project of City Manager Larry Gilley, Communications & Media Relations Manager Lenka Wright, and the staff of ACU-TV under the direction of John Best, ACU’s director of Broadcast Operations.

“It’s a great experience for our students to produce a show that airs regularly like this,” says Bacon.

Cosmetic foot surgery???

August 5th, 2010

Dr. Simon Lee, Orthopedic Surgeon

Along with tummy tucks and facelifts, another cosmetic surgery is taking hold: prettying up the feet. Young women are turning to podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons so that they can look better in a pair of revealing sandals or in slender stilettos made by Jimmy Choo. They want their second toes shortened to align with their other toes; their pinky toes pared down for narrower feet; or the bottom of their heels fattened for better cushioning. But altering the foot for cosmetic reasons is not a good idea, says Dr. Simon Lee, an orthopedic surgeon at Rush. The human foot is a complicated appendage with 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles and tendons. It shouldn’t be tampered with unless there is a good medical reason for doing so.
