ACU tops LSC list of 4.0 GPA athletes
July 15th, 2011
This year, ACU’s student-athletes have proved themselves to be impressive competitors on the field, earning six LSC titles, two NCAA regional titles and two national titles.
However, the students’ success in the classroom has also earned them recognition from the Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. More than 100 student-athletes made the 2010-11 list, and ACU had the most athletes with flawless marks, topping the list with 20 students who hold 4.0 grade point averages.
“I’m extremely proud of each of our student-athletes who have been recognized by the LSC for their excellence in the classroom,” says Jared Mosley, ACU’s director of athletics. “The discipline and effort it takes to balance the number of demands on a college student-athlete are extremely challenging.”
ACU has a long history of academic excellence in its athletic programs.

A Look at the First Airing of ‘Sports Medicine Weekly’
July 3rd, 2011
Dr. Brian Cole
The Chicago Bulls are off to an inconsistent start to their Eastern Conference finals series with the Miami Heat. However, their team physician, Dr. Brian Cole, a faculty member at Rush University Medical Center, had a smooth radio debut.
Cole, who continues to look over the health of a Bulls team that is tied 1-1 in its series with the Heat, provided plenty of sports injury advice and fantasy sports injury insight, while also talking with guest specialists on the first “Sports Medicine Weekly” program, which aired last Saturday from 7-8 a.m. on ESPN’s Chicago affiliate, WMVP-AM. The show will continue in that time slot for 11 more weeks, giving weekend warriors a window to soak up knowledge from a physician who treats some of the world’s top athletes.
These players are no different than our patients,” Dr. Cole said. “These injuries are no different than anything anyone else would sustain.”
A highlight of the show was the fantasy sports segment, which will be a weekly feature.

Revolutionary Treatment for Brain Aneurysms
July 1st, 2011
Dr. Demetrius Lopes
Physicians at Rush University Medical Center are offering a new and effective treatment to patients suffering from complex brain aneurysms. The recently FDA-approved technology, called the Pipeline Embolization Device (PED), gives doctors the ability for the very first time to treat some of the most complex and dangerous brain aneurysms with the use of minimally invasive techniques.
The treatment is focused on reconstruction or remodeling of the weak blood vessel harboring the brain aneurysm.
The Pipeline Device may offer improved patient results with a safe and effective treatment of large or giant, wide-necked aneurysms, which until now has been an unmet clinical need,” said Dr. Demetrius Lopes, neuroendovascular surgeon at Rush University Medical Center. “We are able to help people who did not have a better option and would otherwise die without treatment.”
Rush is the only hospital in Illinois and one of only seven medical centers in the U.S.

Twitter Done Right: Times Higher Education #highered
July 1st, 2011
Ive been following for a bit now. It gives me something to read in TweetDeck when I drink my morning coffee (as its on London time) and provides an interesting window on higher ed issues in the UK and the rest of Europe.
Since I started to follow THE, Ive noticed something very different on the way this higher ed weekly magazine handles its Twitter communications. Last week when I saw referring to a contest THE ran on Twitter, I thought it would be interesting to learn a bit more on how this is done behind the scene.
Sarah Cunnane, the person behind THE Twitter account, was kind enough to answer a few of my questions via email.
1) Can you please tell us a bit more about Times Higher Education (THE)?
Certainly. Times Higher Education is a weekly magazine based in Britain reporting on global higher education issues. We started off as the Times Higher Education Supplement in 1971 and we were originally a newspaper published alongside the Times of London.

Get a chance to win one of the 2 scholarships for #highered Web Arkansas Conference in July
June 28th, 2011
In higher education, summer is a bit like the Holidays season:
Tis the time to receive your professional development gifts (a trip to a 2- or 3-day conference) and gift cards (well, the professional development budget your team will get for the upcoming year).
Well, consider that Christmas (or any other holidays you celebrate in December) is early this year, as Higher Ed Experts, the professional development company I run, will help two of you attend the great HighEdWeb Arkansas Conference (July 21-22, 2011) in Little Rock, AR with a $260 scholarship to cover hotel and conference fees.
Launched last year by Shelley Keith (who has been working for the national heweb conference for quite some time) and friends, this regional conference has a fantastic program this year including:
- Building your minion infrastructure: Training content contributors to help, not hinder (workshop)
- Google Analytics: Measuring a marketing campaign’s success (workshop)
- Chaos in Context: Informed Design Through Analytics
- Once Upon a Semester: Storytelling as a framework for Higher Ed web marketing (keynote by Georgy Cohen)
- Mobile First, Desktop Second
- Making it work more better: A Bag of Tricks from a College Web Guy
Anyway, this conference is definitely a good pick as it also includes some fun and social activities.
HighEdWeb Arkansas Attendees will even be able to win a $350 free pass for a future webinar series by Higher Ed Experts.
So, how do can you get a chance to win one of the 2 scholarships worth $260 each?
- First, you have to work for an institution (university, college, school)
- Second, you have to go to the conference as the scholarship checks will be handed to the winners at the conference (sorry, wont be able to use this money for your next weekend at the beach
- Last, post a 2-sentence comment (my version of the scholarship essay
by June 7June 10, 2011 to explain why you want to attend and should get the scholarship.
Winners will be notified via email and Ill post an update at the top of this post on June 13, 2011.
One more thing: people already registered can also participate.
