Closing the Achievement Gap for ESL/ELL Students

The Latino achievement gap has been an ongoing challenge for years. Studies show an early and persistent gap between the achievement of Hispanic students and that of their white peers. The gap appears by the time students have reached the 3rd grade and remains fairly consistent throughout their school careers impacting graduation rates and college enrollment. This topic hits home for me, as it was the focus of my doctoral research at the University of Akron. My learning was that the Hispanic achievement gap is complex and multi-faceted steeped in cultural differences, language barriers, school climate, environmental factors, and student motivation. While there seems no debate about the disparity in achievement, weve yet to find a solution.
Federal funding for initiatives aimed at closing the gap is out there, but many of the dollars go unspent for various reasons. Educational experts do agree that reform for English language learners requires professional development, opportunities to improve parental involvement, and high-quality resources.

No cancellation or delay for JCPS Friday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After dismissing early Thursday afternoon due to weather, Jefferson County Public Schools will be open and on time Friday.
After monitoring the roads and information from the National Weather Service overnight, JCPS officials announced no delay or closing early Friday morning.
Thursday’s decision was based on the potential white-out conditions that were occurring. Officials said they were concerned with high winds and snow moving through Kentuckiana at the same time students were heading home from school.
WHAS11 News spoke with several parents outside Kammerer Middle School Thursday, and most of them said they agreed with the school district’s decision.
Even though JCPS is heads back to school Friday morning, several other schools in Kentuckiana are closed or on a delay. Click the link below for a complete list of closings and delays.

Work Mobile
You don’t always have to work from your office. You can move your laptop around your home and work mobile. If you don’t already have a WiFi connection, subscribe for one. This way you can work from the couch, at the kitchen table while your kids do homework and even outside as they play. A career in the pharmaceutical industry can be a lot of things. It can be lucrative, it can be the start of a new career, or it can be the job you’ll love for a long time. However, there are a few things you should know before you embark on a career change in the pharmacy field.

A pharmacy careerhas many advantages that you may not be aware of. For instance:
- Benefits. Since most pharmacy related employees work for a company, it is typical that you will receive benefits. This is not true in all cases, but larger companies will most likely offer health benefits and other benefits such as 401K plans, dental insurance and paid time off.

ESRC: Disabled children still being marginalised

Too many disabled children are unable to achieve their full potential because schools and health and social care continue to marginalise them, new research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has found.
Researchers who conducted the study pointed to an epidemic in labeling children as disabled and instead said that society should change its attitude, valuing and promoting diversity.

Functional recipes (strategies) for success at McDonalds UK

Love them or loathe them, its hard to deny that McDonalds has really got its act together in the UK and is thriving in a tough environment for consumer spending. This excellent article from the Independent features an interview with Jill McDonald (no relation to the original founder!) describes some of the key functional strategies that the business has adopted which are credited with improved business performance.
Lots for business students (and their teachers) to get their teeth into here. Among the key strategies adopted are:
- Redesign and renovation of location interiors, with renewed focus on families (marketing & ops) – Wider menu choice, including some healthier options (marketing & ops) – Free WIFI (marketing) – High level of training, including extended apprentice programmes – Increased proportion of locations which are franchises (up from 40% in 2006 to 65% now)
Well worth a read.
