Larry Summers Calls Higher Education Stubborn and Anachronistic, Offers Suggestions

January 22nd, 2012

The following guest post is from Cedar Riener, assistant professor of Psychology at Randolph-Macon College  in Ashland, Virginia.   He blogs about education reform, college teaching, history and philosophy of science at Cedars Digest, where this post also appears.

I squirmed a lot reading Larry Summers’ recent piece in the New York Times on where he thinks and hopes higher education will go in the future. Here’s a point by point analysis:

He begins by undermining his own credibility:

A paradox of American higher education is this: The expectations of leading universities do much to define what secondary schools teach, and much to establish a template for what it means to be an educated man or woman.

REALLY? Have you paid attention to any of the K-12 school reform of the administration you have been a part of? The encouraged emphasis on basic reading and math skills at the cost of social studies, science, physical education and extracurricular activities runs exactly counter to the template of colleges and universities in which diverse offerings, and choices of majors proliferate.

One of the biggest concerns college students who are majoring in marketing have is whether or not they will be able to find a job after earning their chosen degree. The job market in the marketing industry was already competitive, but the recent fall of the economy has caused many college students to graduate without having a set job in place.

Finding a job during these tough economic times requires you to think outside of the box. The following non-traditional marketing jobs are available to students who have majored in marketing.

Marketing for Alternative Fuel Companies

Environmental awareness has caused many alternative fuel companies to spring up all over the world, and like all new businesses these companies require someone to help with the marketing and sales of these alternative fuels. Read more…

IT Professionals: The Doctors of Technology

January 12th, 2012

Believe it or not, but being an information technology professional is a lot like being a medical doctor. They both require an impressive amount of training to even understand the bare minimum. They are both required to be on-call for emergencies. Both professions are often consulted outside their office for free advice from friends and family; and both require a commitment to continuing education to remain at the top of their game.

At least the doctors only have to deal with the human body. IT professionals are constantly inundated with new hardware, software, and services every week. They are expected to be experts on everything from the latest online virus to the newest device or gadget that will “transform the office.”

IT professionals are called upon to make long-term decisions on technologies that are still in the planning stages and are still unproven in the real world. Read more…

A Web Browser is Only The Beginning

January 11th, 2012

Going online has gotten a little too easy. Thanks to laptops, iPads and Wi-Fi, even a five-year old can click a button and get online instantly. The problem is not accessibility; it’s the lack of a roadmap.

Sites like Google, Bing, Wikipedia, Amazon and eBay only exist on the Web, but they are as real to everyone as the Grand Canyon and Coca-Cola. If you give an inexperienced person full online access to everything the Internet has to offer, they could get lost forever. If you don’t know any better, what really distinguishes one website from another when it comes to trust? Read more…

DISD should pursue state money for middle schools

January 4th, 2012

Last summer, I posted an entry encouraging the Dallas school district to go after funds that Texas legislators set aside in the state’s current two-year budget for the Student Success Initiative. Among the strategies that could compete for funds was this topic: middle school initiatives.

The amount included in the rider was not great: about $20 million for fiscal year 2012 and $20 million for fiscal year 2013. Since then, the figure has been whittled down even more. Earmarks have been placed on some of that money.

Still, there is about $9 million available. And it shouldn’t take that much for Dallas to launch a pilot project that targets struggling middle schools.

Dallas Rep. Eric Johnson showed an interest in this concept last year. The Democrat especially wanted to target middle schools in southern Dallas, which he helps represent.

He was right. Eight of southern Dallas’ middle schools are on the state’s list of the lowest performing schools. That means one of two things: At least 50 percent of their students failed the state’s achievement test in two or the last three years or the school was rated unacceptable for one of the last three years.

How to Prepare For a New Career without Quitting Your Job?

December 17th, 2011

If you are already working full time and want to change your career, you can opt for various online degree programs. Distance learning offers you maximum flexibility so that you can plan your schedule and study at your own pace.

Preparing For a New Career without Discontinuing Your Job

Students choose online degree programs for various reasons; predominantly due to the convenience they offer. For those working full time, online degrees help them in developing a career or in revamping their existing one without discontinuing their existing jobs and allows them to avoid a break of two- or four-year from work which they would otherwise have had to take in order to pursue higher education.

Online colleges help you to opt for online degrees at any place and can help you complete the course from the comfort of your home.
